During a visit to Tanzania, Aexandra and Brian Black saw first hand a school with virtually no resources. Being aware of the surplus resources available in Australian schools, they decided to set up an aid supply for schools in developing countries.
In November 2001 a shipping container was purchased and placed at the rear of St George's Church in Magill, South Australia. This is where the second-hand resources donated from schools are stored, sorted and packed every month.
The books continue to arrive in a steady stream via the courier to Thorndon Park Primary School, which acts as our depot, to which most school happily donate.
Once the books are sorted and packaged, they are stored in the container waiting shipment to Africa. Goods are sent one pallet at a time so that receiving schools can physically manage the transportation and unpacking.
A pallet of approximately 24 cartons costs $1,100 to send.
Occasionally there are added expenses when difficulties arise with handling, documentation and customs.
Our devoted group of volunteers has raised money through quiz nights, fashion parades lunches, Lamington drives and raffles.
We also sell Phoenix Cards and Stationery - to view products and order - www.phoenix-trading.com.au/web/alexandrablack
Friends also make donations, including one from Rose Park Primary School SRC for $1,000. EDUCARE “Sharing Hope Through Education” Inc. normally works independently but do collaborate with other organisations to transport books and receiving and distributing materials, such as Hope Inc, Word Youth International, Anglican and Uniting Churches.
The organisation became incorporated on 15th July 2009.
